A one-horse town 
Merchants in tiny Kennett Square benefit from largesse lavished on injured racer. Alice Berstler's florist shop started bustling the day Barbaro came to town. The Kentucky Derby winner was admitted to the large-animal hospital in Kennett Square, Chester County, in May for treatment of the life-threatening injury that ended his racing career.

The Lights Are On in Pine City 
Anna sipped water through a straw to wash down her pain medication. She sat at her kitchen table, watching her mother, Irene, and her 16-year-old son, Thomas, making Christmas dinner. Her Christmas dinner. Thomas pulled the blender down from the shelf. "What's that for?" Anna scribbled onto the pad of paper on the table near her. "None of my recipes need a blender."
